Olaszországban, a római műveltség klasszikus hazájában a XIV. és XV.
századok folyamán egy nagyszerű művelődési áramlat jut a virágzásnak magas
fokára: a humanizmus. Olaszországban a középkor folyamán sem szakadt meg az
az összekötő kapocs, mely az olasz népet származásánál, nyelvénél és
emlékeinél fogva a rómaiakhoz fűzte. Sőt néhány lelkes tudós és költő ezt az
emléket megújította, a klasszikusok műveit ismét az érdeklődés
középpontjaivá tette és divatba hozta a régiek eszmevilágát. Azután pedig a
rómaiak szellemi termékeit összeolvasztotta a középkori szellemmel s így
megteremtette az újkori tudományt. A római birodalom bukása idején az ízlés és birálat szelleme kiveszett
volt a keresztény világban. Az egyháziak a római irók műveit egy ideig a
legerősebb akadályoknak tekintették a keresztény vallás terjesztésében.
Később azonban a kereszténység nem félhetett többé a pogányságtól, belátták,
hogy az egyházi szertartások és a szentírás magyarázatában, az egyházi atyák
tanulmányozásában nem lehetnek el a latin nyelv nélkül. Latin nyelvet
tanulni azonban az irók ismerete nélkül nem lehetett. "A költőket, kiket
eddigelé halálos ellenségeknek tekintett, most szövetségesekül el kellett,
hogy fogadja az Egyház, a barbárság elleni hadjáratában." Ily módon

„Aiming to promote responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism in the framework of the right of all persons to use their free time for leisure pursuits or travel with respect for the choices of society of all peoples” (Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, UNWTO, 1999) „…affirm the right to tourism and the freedom of tourist movements, state our wish to promote an equitable, responsible and sustainable world tourism order, whose benefits will be shared by all sectors of society in the context of an open and liberalized international economy, and solemnly adopt to these ends the principles of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism” (Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, UNWTO, 1999) Everyone, regardless of their physical, sensory, or cognitive capacities, should have the opportunity to travel and explore the world. This should be a universal luxury that is open to everyone. On the other hand, the tourist sector has failed to adequately meet the requirements of people with disabilities for an excessively long period of time. As a result, a sizeable percentage of the population is unable to fully participate in or enjoy the activities that are offered by the industry. Researchers, educators, and professionals working in the tourist sector have been encouraged to critically investigate ways in which tourism might be made more accessible, inclusive, and ultimately more fulfilling for all individuals as a result of this divide.
