2001 őszén Debrecenben védtem meg doktori értekezésemet, „A magyar mezőgazdaság regionális szerkezete a 20. század elején” címmel. Debreceni témavezetőm, Gunst Péter, opponenseim Szuhay Miklós és Tímár Lajos, a doktori védési bizottság elnöke, Orosz István, tagjai Fónagy Zoltán és Szász Zoltán voltak. A doktori bizottság összegzése szerint „a munka magasan meghaladja a PhD értekezésekkel kapcsolatos elvárásokat, és megkerülhetetlen lesz a következő évek gazdaság-és társadalomtörténetének kutatásában”. 2002-ben elnyertem az Alapítvány a Magyar Felsőoktatásért és Kutatásért pályázatát a kézirat kiadására a Doktori Mestermunkák sorozatban. A könyv 200 példányban jelent meg, a fejezetekben előforduló táblázatokhoz nem megfelelő, A5 méretben. Nem tartalmazta a munka legfontosabb eredményeit, azokat a megyesoros adatokat, amelyek közel 100.000, a mezőgazdasággal közvetlen, vagy közvetett módon kapcsolatba hozható adat számítógépbe rögzítésével, majd ezek feldolgozásával létrejöttek. így sem az egyes régiók vagy települések kutatóihoz, sem az agrár-történetírás szakembereihez nem juthattak el az 18951915 közötti időszak nyomtatott statisztikai forrásainak feldolgozásával született adatsorok. De a magyar és a nemzetközi gazdaságtörténet-írásnak is vesztesége, hogy a doktori kézirat csak részben jelent meg nyomtatásban. Az azóta eltelt évek során számos …
